About antimalarials
-
What is malaria?
Malaria is a serious tropical disease spread by mosquitoes. If malaria is not diagnosed and treated promptly, it can be fatal - it only takes one mosquito bite.
-
How can I stop getting malaria?
The first way to avoid malaria is to stop mosquitoes from biting you. You can do this by wearing long sleeves and trousers in the evenings and wearing an insect repellent that is at least 70% DEET.
If you do get bitten, the only way to avoid developing malaria is if you've been taking antimalarials. You have to start taking these before reaching the malaria risk area for them to be most effective. -
Which antimalarial treatment is right for me?
There are many different strains of malaria so the right choice of antimalarial treatment depends on where you are travelling. There are also significant clinical considerations - our doctors will be able to advise you on the most appropriate option if you are unsure.
