Weight loss injections and pills: what you need to know

If you’re just beginning your weight loss journey, we can prescribe Xenical (a weight loss tablet), Mounjaro and Wegovy (weight loss injections) online, if medically suitable.

If you are interested in weight loss treatment, click the ‘Start consultation’ button to complete a questionnaire outlining your:

  • Health
  • Weight
  • Lifestyle
  • Any existing medications you are currently taking

Our clinicians will use this information to make sure that your preferred treatment is safe, suitable and appropriate. If that’s the case, they can then approve your prescription for weight loss treatment.

Do I qualify for weight loss injections and pills?

Our doctors can only prescribe treatments like Wegovy, Mounjaro or Xenical if your BMI is above 30. This can be lower – 27 for Mounjaro and Wegovy and 28 for Xenical – if you have a risk factor such as high cholesterol.

Your height and weight are used to calculate your BMI. While a higher BMI can increase the likelihood of you developing weight-related conditions like heart disease, it is not a faultless measure of health (for example, it can’t tell the difference between weight from fat and weight from muscle).

Please note that people from certain ethnic backgrounds (Middle Eastern, Asian, Black African and African- Caribbean) are more likely to develop health problems from a lower BMI.

If you are ordering weight loss treatment from us for the first time, you will need to provide a video showing:

  • Your ID
  • Your weight

This is so we can verify your identity and BMI. Once these are confirmed we can finalise your prescription.

It's not suitable if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. It is not safe to take if you have certain medical conditions, so please tell us about any in your questionnaire.

How do weight loss injections and pills work?

As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, Mounjaro and Wegovy work by mimicking the hormone that triggers insulin release from the pancreas. This has the following effects on our body:

  • Appetite suppression
  • Blood sugar regulation
  • Slows digestion

In other words, the weight loss treatments leave you feeling less hungry, encourage you to eat smaller portions and help you to feel fuller for longer.

Xenical is a lipase inhibitor. It works by reducing the absorption of fat from your diet into your body. Instead, this fat passes out in your poo.

You will get optimal results out of these treatments as part of a weight management programme – a calorie-reduced diet and increased regular
exercise.

Which weight loss medication is right for me?

If you’re unsure whether to choose a weight loss pill like Xenical or a weekly injection
like Mounjaro or Wegovy, make sure you’ve thought about:

  • What's stopping you from losing weight? If it’s portion size, then Mounjaro or Weovy might be more helpful. If you have a high-fat diet, Xenical is more suitable.
  • Do you have any issues with needles?
  • Your BMI
  • How often do you want to take a weight loss treatment?
  • Will you remember to take a weekly treatment?
  • How much weight you're planning to lose
  • The side effects of each treatment (see below)

Also remember that you’ll probably see the best results from Wegovy, Xenical or Mounjaro if they’re used alongside regular exercise and a healthy diet.

Weight loss treatment side effects

Do not take Mounjaro, Wegovy or Xenical if you are allergic to any of their ingredients. If you start to have an allergic reaction, stop taking the treatment and speak to your GP immediately.

Common side effects when taking Mounjaro, Wegovy and Xenical can include dizziness, bloating, indigestion and headaches.

These side effects are usually mild and can get better once your body has gotten used to the treatment.

Rarer side effects for each treatment can include gallstones, fast heartbeat and skin blistering.

If you begin to experience any side effects, talk to your GP. For more information on Mounjaro and Xenical’s side effects please read their patient leaflets:

About weight loss tablets

  • Health benefits of losing weight

If you are overweight, there are a lot of benefits to losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. These include:

    • Reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes and strokes
    • Reduced joint pain
    • Improved mental health and self-esteem
    • Higher libido
    • Higher fertility and lower risk to pregnancy
  • Are weight loss treatments safe?

Mounjaro, Wegovy and Xenical are considered safe to use for adults with a BMI above 30 at their recommended dosage:

    • Mounjaro: Once a week
    • Wegovy: Once a week
    • Xenical: One tablet before, during or up to an hour after a meal

During your medical consultation we will determine if your chosen weight loss treatment is appropriate for you to use.

If you start to feel unwell while taking weight loss injections, weight loss tablets or start to feel any side effects (see above), then talk to your GP.

  • Are weight loss treatments available over the counter?

No, you cannot buy Mounjaro, Wegovy or Xenical over the counter.

You will need a prescription for either treatment – if you would like a prescription from Lloyds Online Doctor you will have to complete an online medical consultation.

As mentioned above, you will need to provide a video of your ID and weight to verify your BMI for Mounjaro or Wegovy.

  • How long do weight loss treatments take to work?

Weight loss is a gradual process and can take time before you start to notice a difference. On average:

Xenical: You should start to see results from Xenical after two weeks.

Mounjaro: You should start to see results from Mounjaro after four to six weeks.

Wegovy: According to clinical studies, you should start to see weight loss results from Wegovy from the fourth week onwards.

  • What to eat when using weight loss treatment

If you want the best results while taking weight loss treatment, you should take it within a calorie controlled, low fat diet. You should make sure you include:

    • Fresh fruits and vegetables
    • Lean proteins
    • Fibre
    • Whole grains

    Try to avoid

    • High amounts of sugar
    • High amounts of saturated fats
    • If you're experiencing nausea as a side effect, foods with strong tastes or smells

Bear in mind that Xenical will only work if your diet includes fat. If you’re eating a no-fat diet, there won’t be anything for it to get rid of.

Once you stop taking this medication, it’s important to keep up a healthy diet and regular exercise.

  • Can you get Ozempic in Ireland for weight loss?

Ozempic is available as a treatment for type-2 diabetes in Ireland. It is not currently prescribed for weight loss – any prescription for it would have to be off-label. Mounjaro and Wegovy work similarly to Ozempic (Wegovy contains the same active ingredient, semaglutide) and can be prescribed for weight loss.
